Bring the rich history of the fruit industry right in to your classroom!

As the primary heritage institution of Hood River County, The History Museum is honored to share with teachers this wonderful educational resource. The trunk, curriculum and contents are designed to assist teachers in implementing a variety of activities and lessons that meet state educational standards, while exploring the fruit industry of the Hood River Valley and the Mid-Columbia Region.

Fruitopia curriculum is designed for grades 3rd – 6th, however, many of the lesson suggestions can cross over and be adapted to accommodate other grade levels. Lessons cover all subject areas: history, science, language arts, math and art.

Trunk Contents:
Artifacts such a picker’s bag and packing boxes
Non-fiction and fiction picture books
DVD’s on fruit production in the Hood River Valley
Laminated posters, fruit labels and photographs
Supplemental teaching materials such as artificial apples, cardboard packing boxes, bug traps, fruit slicers and sizers
Consumable materials such as brochures and plastic pear packers that are utilized in lessons and activities

The classroom teacher is responsible for the transportation or shipping of the trunk. The trunk weighs 110 pounds and measures 19” tall x 23” deep x 35” wide. It will fit into a small van or SUV. Since the trunk is heavy, it is equipped with wheels to make it portable, but it is best to have another person assist with lifting.

A fee of $5.00 per week is charged to assist with replacing consumable items within the trunk. Trunks are rented for three week periods. Rental fee for additional weeks is $10 each.

This trunk was created in memory of Elvera Flerchinger, long time Hood River teacher and museum board member. Funds for the trunk were provided by the Oregon Community Foundation, John and Jane Youell Fund, Hood River Lions Foundation, memorial gifts for Elvera Flerchinger and Ruth Guppy, The Fruit Foundation Historical Society, Duckwall Pooley Fruit, and the Pear Bureau Northwest.
